Welcome in lakemaggioresee.com, the tourist guide of the lake Maggiore.
This tourist guide wants to give every person the possibility to know and to admire the territory, the history, the art and the landscapes of one of the most beautiful areas of Italy.
Lake Maggiore is the most western of the three large prealpine lakes of Europe and the second largest after Lake Garda.
The lake’s jagged banks are surrounded by the Prealps of Piedmont and Lombardy. The western bank is in Piedmont (provinces of Novara and Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola) and the eastern in Lombardy (province of Varese), whereas the most northerly section extends thirteen kilometres into Switzerland, where it constitutes the lowest point (in terms of altitude) in that entire country.
Dickens, Flaubert, Byron, Stendahl, Manzoni and, in more recent times, Hemingway, are just a few of the illustrious visitors who enjoyed not only pleasant sojourns in these areas only but also discovered endless fonts of inspiration. Lakes, islands, mountains, characteristic towns and picturesque villages, masterpieces of Nature as well as Man awaiting to be discovered by experiencing them day by day, and revelling in their scents and the zest of their flavours. And in the gentle evening breezes, as the sun sets over the water, you can hear, like Piero Chiara, Narrator of this land, the voices of a history full of events, traditions, atmosphere and curiosities, a history born of a time that – in certain moments – seems to have magically stood still.
