History lake MaggioreThe archaeological finds say us that, after the creation of the lake, with the complete withdrawal of the ice, the surrounding area was inhabited by nomadic groups, that mostly used the territory as a place for the hunting. The area was newly controlled in the following periods by the Gauls; they had therefore the supremacy on the lacustrine territory until the advancing of the Romans that led back the area to province of the empire. The ‘Verbanus Lacus’ (name given by the Romans) or ‘Lacus Maximus’ will remain in the roman empire until the raids of the Nordic people and the barbaric invasions. To arrive to a period of rebirth of the cities on the lake we have to wait until the Middle Ages, that will bring to the creation of villages and castles. In this period the area around the lake, therefore like numerous territories in the environs of Milan, passed to different families, as the Della Torre, the Visconti, the reigning house of the Asburgo from the 1713, and in particular to Borromeo family, which had an enormous infuence for longest years on the lake area.
