The climate

The climate lake MaggioreThe lake represents an exceptional natural atmosphere, whose mild climate is very close to the Mediterranean one, thanks to the morphology of the territory. Its happy position and the mild climate both during summer and winter, has made possible the creation of different towns. Like all prealpine lakes, the Lake Maggiore is crossed, above all in the beautiful season, by two kinds of winds, one that blows the morning from mountains towards the plain (said Moscendrino, sometimes Tramontana) and a breeze that blows from the plain to the mountain above all during the afternoon (said Inverna). These constant winds make of prealpine lakes an optimal field where to practise sports that use the wind, like sailing and windsurf. The Lake Maggiore has particular points, above all in the high part, where the mountains are tightened to form a narrow valley in which these winds blow very strong. Other typical winds of this lake are: the Invernone, that blows from the south-west and generally brings storms with it, the Maggiore, that comes from the northeast and it is much dangerous because the lake gets rough with it, the Valmaggino that softly bolws from the valleys behind Locarno, and the Mergozzo, than blows, above all at night, from the north-west.
